A scenic journey through Western Australia’s Wheatbelt reveals towering granite monoliths, golden fields and unforgettable outback charm.
The last time I ventured into this incredible landscape it was canola season (late August); the fields were vibrant yellow and wildflowers were emerging. I took a solo road trip from Perth to Kwolyin – the starting point for the Granite Way scenic drive – to photograph and explore.
While spring is special, one of my favourite times to drive the Granite Way is in autumn, the tail end of the hot Noongar season Bunuru (February to March) and beginning of Djeran (April to May). Temperatures are on the way down and it’s golden time in the wheatbelt – a photographer’s dream! The landscape is on the cusp of change, with dewy mornings and the possibility of rain; migratory birds arrive from the northern hemisphere, and wheat farmers sow their seeds. New life is imminent.
Summiting Australia’s third-largest monolith is just one of the surprises that await on an autumn journey along Western Australia’s Granite Way.
