Fuel-Efficient Driving: The Single Biggest Factor on the Road
As fuel prices surge amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, Australians hitting the road in motorhomes or towing caravans are feeling the strain, with fuel remaining one of the biggest expenses of any trip.
According to the Tourism and Transport Forum Easter Travel Survey, 26% of Australians said they would choose destinations closer to home, 22% would reduce the number of trips they make and 20% will delay or cancel planned holidays.
But industry experts said small changes could make a big difference when every litre counts.
Carla Fitzpatrick from 24/7 Roadservices Australia said vehicle weight, aerodynamics, speed, tyre pressure and towing all played a role in fuel consumption and fully loaded motorhomes or caravans significantly increased fuel use.
“High speeds, frequent stops, towing, overloading and driving on hilly or unsealed roads all increase consumption,” she said. “Many people also forget the added drag from roof racks or towing.”

The Case for Cruise Control
When it comes to fuel savings, Carla said driving habits were the biggest factor.
“Driving at a steady, moderate speed is the single most effective way to save fuel,” she said. “Using cruise control on highways can really help maintain that consistency, especially when towing.”
The Towing Factor
Towing, in particular, could significantly increase fuel consumption by 20 to 30% or more.
But practical ways to minimise the impact include keeping tyre pressure correct, loading efficiently, maintaining moderate speeds and avoiding aggressive acceleration.
A Little TLC Goes a Long Way
Vehicle maintenance is another often-overlooked factor, especially at a time when every extra dollar spent on fuel adds up.
“Simple checks like tyre pressure, clean air filters, and making sure everything is well-tuned can make a noticeable difference,” Carla said.
“For those towing, it’s also important to check trailer wheel bearings and hitch connections.”
Plan Your Fuel Stops
With fuel prices varying widely between regions, particularly in remote areas, planning ahead was becoming more important than ever.
Carla said fuel apps and price trackers were proving to be valuable tools for travellers trying to avoid overpaying or running low in isolated locations.
“They’re definitely worth using because they help you plan where to refuel and avoid getting caught out,” she said.
Busting a Few Fuel Myths
There are also a few persistent myths that can cost drivers more in the long run.
“There’s a misconception that idling saves fuel, it doesn’t,” Carla said. “And premium fuel doesn’t automatically improve efficiency unless your engine actually requires it.”
Don't forget your CMCA member benefits
If you’re a member of the CMCA, there are a few ways to help you ease the pressure; the club’s Member Advantages program includes partnerships with fuel providers (Trinity Petroleum and Freedom Fuels), giving travellers access to discounts that can help offset rising costs.
