The Ultimate Guide to Northern Territory Road Trips

Plan your Northern Territory road trip with this guide to short escapes and epic adventures, featuring waterfalls, Aboriginal culture, and iconic landscapes.

Northern Territory road trips: waterfalls, desert wonders, and Aboriginal culture for every traveller.

If you’re after a road trip with a difference, the Northern Territory is calling. From the tropical Top End to the rugged Red Centre, this land is packed with wild adventures, iconic landscapes, and cultural experiences that go beyond the usual Aussie road trip.

Get ready for epic drives that promise everything from UNESCO World Heritage sites and ancient Aboriginal rock art to world-class fishing, crystal-clear waterholes, and skies full of stars. The NT isn't just about seeing; it’s about really connecting—with nature, history, and stories stretching back over 60,000 years.

Whether you're rolling in from out of state, renting a set of wheels, or dusting off the old rig for a serious roadie, the NT has you covered. From short hops to longer drives that dig deep into the heart of this vast territory, there’s a road trip for every style and schedule.

Iconic NT short drives (2–5 Days)

Waterfall hopping around Litchfield National Park (2 days)

Kick things off from Darwin and head south to Berry Springs, where locals know the best waterholes around. Stop by the Berry Springs Tavern for a feed, then dive into Litchfield’s famed swimming spots like Wangi Falls, Florence Falls, and Buley Rockhole. Feeling adventurous? Extend your trip to Dundee Beach or Crab Claw Island, a fishing hotspot of the Top End.

Kakadu Explorer (4 days)

Kakadu is a world unto itself. Home to native wildlife, ancient rock art, and some breathtaking scenery, it’s a must-do. Start at Jabiru and visit Ubirr’s famous Aboriginal rock art, then catch the sunset over the floodplains. A Yellow Water Cruise from Cooinda is a great way to spot crocs in their natural habitat. For a touch of off-road, tackle the 4WD tracks to Twin Falls and Jim Jim Falls (seasonal access).

Katherine + Nitmiluk Explorer (4 days)

The Nitmiluk region offers serene swimming spots and wildlife galore. Grab a bite at the Lazy Lizard Tavern, cool off at Katherine Hot Springs, and head into Nitmiluk National Park for the Baruwei Loop Walk. Don’t miss the kayak rentals, river cruises, or a scenic helicopter flight over the gorge. Wrap up the trip with a cultural tour at Top Didj and a refreshing dip at Leliyn (Edith Falls) on your way back to Darwin.

Red Centre Way (5 days)

This journey through Australia’s spiritual heart is one for the books. Start in Alice Springs with a sunrise balloon or camel ride, then dive into the gorges of Tjoritja/West MacDonnell Ranges. Kings Canyon and Uluru await, offering rich red sands, rugged cliffs, and sacred landscapes that’ll leave you in awe.

Iconic NC long drives (10 Days or More)

Nature’s Way (8 days)

Set off from Darwin on this scenic loop to Kakadu, Nitmiluk, and back via Litchfield. Along the way, cruise lily-covered billabongs, spot crocs, and uncover ancient rock art. This trip packs in the best of the Top End, with a mix of Aboriginal culture, wild landscapes, and adventure.

Savannah Way (14 days)

If remote outback camping and endless starry skies are your jam, this Queensland-to-NT route is the ticket. Wander through 15 national parks, dip into Mataranka’s thermal pools, and try your luck with the Million Dollar Fish challenge. Make sure to drop by the iconic Daly Waters Pub—a true Territory legend.

Binns Track (10 days)

This four-wheel-drive adventure winds from the South Australian border through the NT’s lesser-known treasures. Explore gold rush towns, fossick for stones, and marvel at the giant granite boulders of Karlu Karlu/Devils Marbles. The track ends at Timber Creek, where fishing or a boat cruise will top off your adventure.

Arnhem Way (7–10 days)

Arnhem Land is an experience like no other. This journey from Katherine to Nhulunbuy immerses travellers in rich Aboriginal culture, from guided tours to art galleries showcasing traditional works. The trip also leads you through pristine beaches, prime fishing spots, and wetlands bustling with native wildlife.

The Northern Territory’s roads are calling, and whether you’re planning a quick escape or a full-blown adventure, there’s a journey here that’ll make you want to keep exploring. So, pack the RV, load up the snacks, and hit the road—the NT’s wild heart is ready to welcome you.
