Where turquoise waters meet red pindan dunes, and cobalt skies give way to fiery sunsets.
Broome/Rubibi is a destination that needs no filter. This tropical Western Australian town at the gateway to the Kimberley is a riot of colour-saturated contrasts – where turquoise waters meet red pindan dunes, and cobalt skies give way to fiery sunsets. Famous for its enormous tides and multicultural vibes, Broome has a layered history of First Nations culture, dinosaurs, pearlers and laid-back wanderers. Every Aussie road traveller doing 'the lap' comes to Broome and, unsurprisingly, many stay longer than they intended.
Sunset Scenes
Riding a camel at sunset on Cable Beach is a quintessential Broome experience. Is it touristy? Yes. Does it matter? No. Rocking in the saddle in step with a dromedary as it lumbers along the beach – spindly legs casting long shadows in the sand – is an experience that must be done at least once in your lifetime.
There are various operators offering camel safaris, and the best are at sunset. Climb aboard your camel as it crouches in the sand, and hold on tight as it lurches to a standing position. The rest of the experience is deliciously sedate as a guide leads the camel caravan into the sunset. Watching the spectacle from the beach is magnificent, too.
