From floodwaters to renewal, Lawn Hill’s timeless beauty and rich Indigenous stories continue to inspire.
Emerald-green waters shimmer beneath vivid blue skies and red rock formations. Balmy days spent walking and swimming give way to pink and purple sunsets. Nature is painting rainbows, which is fitting, as Boodjamulla means ‘Rainbow Serpent Country’ in the Waanyi language.
We’re deep in Gulf Country at Lawn Hill Gorge Boodjamulla National Park, in remote north-west Queensland, a place we’d long wanted to visit.
We had driven west via Gregory, the gateway to the national park and an easier route than the roads north from Mt Isa. A night or two at Gregory is a perfect prelude to Lawn Hill, with free camping on the banks of the Gregory River. Nearby are the historic Gregory Downs Hotel and Murrays Place cafe, as well as potable water, toilets and a dump point.
