Exploring North Straddie by RV
There’s a familiar knot of excitement in my belly as the hand signal goes up; it’s time. So long, Brisbane. Your city may be buzzing and your restaurant scene is on fire but, in my eyes, your biggest selling point is 30 kilometres offshore. With our nose almost nudging the van in front on the ferry, I kill the engine and look back at the kids with a grin. We wind the windows down and breathe in the briny air. “Here we go,” I exclaim.
There are hundreds of islands along Queensland’s coast but during the past 12 years, this one has held me captive. It’s where I’ve camped on countless weekends with friends, where we pushed our son onto his first wave, and the place I yearn to return to again and again.
With casuarina-lined golden beaches – some stretching for kilometres with not a person in sight – and parklands where wallabies and koalas casually share space with day trippers, Minjerribah/North Stradbroke Island is a special place.
