Rainbow Valley/Wurre, NT

This is one of Central Australia’s hidden secrets – a massive multi-coloured sandstone outcrop with sawtooth cliffs that spectacularly change colour in the late afternoon. A well-maintained sand track (4WD recommended but not essential) leads to the outcrop, about 100 kilometres south of Alice Springs.

A small bush camping area with a toilet and free gas barbecues is located close to the rock face. (There is also an overflow campground a little further away.)  Try to get there well before sunset to see the dramatic colour changes which culminate in a rich red glow on the rock and a lovely warm orange tone on the claypan in the foreground. If you have time, there are several enjoyable walks through the rocky hillsides.
