Christchurch to Queenstown: A Road Trip of Wonders
Travellers have long been drawn to the dramatic scenery of New Zealand's west coast, but my family's favourite South Island road trip is from Christchurch to Queenstown. This 480-kilometre journey past snowy peaks, eye-popping rivers and picture-book mountain hamlets is dotted with free camps, hot springs and foodie stops perfect for rumbling tummies.
We start in Christchurch, the Garden City known for its beautiful green wedges and beaches. It's just the spot to stock the camper and get organised from our base at Tasman Holiday Parks – Christchurch, before heading south. But before we do, we take a 90-minute detour north to the Banks Peninsula and Akaroa. This stunning harbour town is a wonderful spot where you can soak in the turquoise water and wander the charming French inspired streets. We grab some famous Akaroa salmon and crusty French sticks, take them to the end of the pier and keep watch for dolphins and seals cruising the bay. It's also a great spot to hop on a wildlife cruise or simply picnic by the water.
CHRISTCHURCH TO RAKAIA GORGE AND METHVEN
Two hours south of Christchurch, Rakaia Gorge delivers classic South Island scenery – blue rivers, snowy peaks and winding walks. It's a favourite with photographers, tourists and locals alike, and is particularly beautiful when the mountains are draped in snow. Be sure to hike the Rakaia Gorge Walkway. There's a really peaceful feeling out here – big skies, winding rivers, snow-capped mountains and cute little towns where you can stop for a coffee and home-made scone and go treasure hunting in some great antique shops.
