If you enjoy exploring on two wheels, set your GPS for southern New South Wales as the region has just launched a new 550-kilometre mountain bike trail.

The Great Southern Trails initiative incorporates more than 100 individual trails across 10 MTB destinations from the mountains to the coast. Featured hotspots include Thredbo in the Snowy River high country,

Stromlo in Canberra, and trails around the south coast towns of Narooma, Tathra, Eden and Mogo. A dedicated website provides all the information mountain bikers need to hit the saddle in the featured regions, but you’ll need to plan for a 1,000-kilometre road trip to tackle them all.

Destination Southern New South Wales (DSNSW) launched the incorporated trail network to capitalise on the growing popularity of the adventure sport.

“Mountain biking is one of the fastest growing tourism segments in regional Australia,” DSNSW general manager Richard Everson says. “Tourism Research Australia estimates cycle tourism contributes $1 billion annually to the visitor economy. Every trail network brings riders to local cafes, pubs, accommodation, visitor attractions, and tours.”
