Is This the Best Off-Grid Motorhome in Australia? A Look at the Kruiswagen Ecoscape

Meet the Kimberley Kampers Kruiswagen Ecoscape: a luxury off-grid motorhome built for Australia's toughest terrain. Smart tech, sustainable design, and comfort for remote travellers over 50.

Luxury off-grid motorhome packed with tech, comfort and built for Australia's remote touring

When I turned 30 (quite some time ago now), I celebrated by running away to French Polynesia for 10 days with my husband. It was grand. It involved an overwater bungalow, learning to snorkel for the first time, and my first real taste of luxury – something I've never quite recovered from.

Kimberley Kampers, on the other hand, did something far more ambitious to mark its 30th birthday. It launched its very first motorhome: the Kruiswagen. A luxury, off‑road, off‑grid RV built on a Mercedes‑Benz Sprinter AWD, it's a bold leap for a company long known for its rugged yet high‑end caravans and hybrids. And since I now like a good side of comfort and luxury with my holidays, especially the kind that lets you park in the middle of nowhere but still have a cuppa with Wi‑Fi and hot water, this RV is right up my alley.

This all‑terrain Class B motorhome comes in two models – the Kruiswagen Classic and the more eco‑conscious and tech‑packed Kruiswagen Ecoscape. I had the chance to try out the Ecoscape model for a few days, and it's safe to say I was impressed.

Luxury Off‑Road RV Built to Explore Anywhere

From the outside, the Kruiswagen strikes a bold figure. My review model came in a sleek grey with Kimberley's trademark orange and red striping, but you can also opt for a classic white finish. The rugged credentials are clear: Warn winch, BFG All‑Terrain tyres, electric steps that double as rock‑sliders, and a factory 50 mm lift give it real off‑road teeth. A roof ladder, Aeropod rooftop storage, rear‑mounted spare wheel, driving lights, UHF radio, and Maxtrax round out a package that's not just talk, it's ready to go off‑road to the good campsites.

Add in upgraded suspension, a snorkel, and underbody protection, and you've got a rig that can do more than just navigate dirt tracks – it's built for the Red Centre and beyond. There's even a second external hot/cold shower, outdoor kitchen, and 4.5 metre electric awning to complete the Outback living experience. Want to extend your camp setup? Simply add internal walls and floors to create an annex‑style extra room under the awning.

Off‑Grid Power System for Self‑Sufficient Travel

When Janis Joplin sang Kris Kristofferson's famous lyrics, "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" in Me and Bobby McGee, she likely wasn't picturing a deluxe off‑grid motorhome. But in the case of the Kruiswagen Ecoscape, freedom takes on a new meaning: the loss of needing to rely on dump points, power hookups, or even sealed highways. And that's exactly where this vehicle shines.

Kimberley Kampers has gone all‑in on genuine off‑grid capability, with a 48 V EcoFlow Power Hub at its core. This clever system includes a 5 kWh lithium battery, 3,600 W inverter, and a 3,000 W AC charger as standard. There's 400 W of rooftop solar fitted (with the option to upgrade to a massive 1,200 W), which means you can run appliances like the 190‑litre Bushman fridge/freezer, rooftop air conditioner, and even a Ninja electric barbecue – all without relying on gas. Yep, the entire cooking setup is gas‑free, so you can leave the LPG bottles at home.

Add in Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi connectivity, smartphone control apps, and Starlink‑ready wiring, and you're not just off‑grid – you're bringing the smart home with you.

On the water front, there's 196 litres of onboard fresh water across dual tanks, a 50 litre grey water tank, and a Thirsty Nomad water purifier that lets you pump water directly from a creek or billabong using the Visiflow system. A high‑definition smart monitor displays your real‑time usage, so you know exactly how much freedom you've got left in the tank.

Smart Interior Design for Comfortable Remote RV Living

Step inside and the Kruiswagen's clever design becomes immediately apparent. Built with composite floors, walls and ceiling, it avoids timber altogether in favour of lightweight aluminium cabinetry and recycled PET plastics – a nod to Kimberley Kampers' reputation for both durability and sustainability.

The real showstopper? The PowerGlide electric loft bed that lowers smoothly from the ceiling over the rear dinette. It's a full‑sized double with a plush pocket‑spring mattress and can remain fully made‑up during travel. Access is via a custom slide‑out alloy ladder, and dual reading lights make it a cosy retreat.

Seating and living areas are well appointed with Corian benchtops, LED lighting, a bamboo‑accented finish; and thoughtful touches like a swivelling passenger seat, fold‑away inside/outside tables and plenty of storage throughout. Storage nooks abound, with overhead cabinets, cargo nets, soft‑lined pockets and hidden compartments that make excellent use of space without clutter.

The ensuite sits behind the driver's seat and includes a full‑sized shower, composting toilet and Webasto air/water heater … perfect for those who like a side of comfort with their freedom.

Double Kitchens and Compact Living for Off‑Grid Motorhome Life

One of the more unique aspects of the Kruiswagen is its dual‑kitchen setup. Inside, you'll find a compact yet highly functional area with solid‑surface benchtops, dual induction cooktop, sink with hot and cold water, a microwave, and even wireless charging for your devices.

Outside, a slide‑out cooking area includes a prep bench, sink with hot and cold tap, and a Ninja portable electric BBQ. That inside table? It's actually a table within a table. Simply take the top off it and use the 'top table' as your outside table, leaving a hidden smaller table underneath to be used as your inside table. The option to cook under the stars or out of the wind is a win for those long travel days when you just want to throw a snag on and relax.

Designed for Modern Travellers Seeking an Off‑Road RV

Whether you're a retiree seeking premium comfort or a digital nomad looking to work in comfort on the road, the Kruiswagen is built for long‑term, off‑grid travel. Despite its off‑road bones, it handles the highway well with all the safety features you'd expect from a modern vehicle. My only complaint was that the tyres ran a little noisily on the highway. An easy irk to forgive, especially given how well it manages town runs and supermarket car parks with ease. This, of course, is a huge bonus when it comes time to stock up… although you might want to skip the Macca's drive‑thru due to its height.

Thermal blinds, insect screens, tinted caravan‑style windows and a well‑insulated cabin help keep the climate under control; while the Fusion sound system adds to the creature comforts.

Final Verdict on the Kimberley Kampers Off‑Grid Motorhome

The Kimberley Kampers Kruiswagen Ecoscape is not your average motorhome. It's a smart, rugged and incredibly well‑thought‑out machine that doesn't just promise off‑grid luxury – it delivers it. It's a serious investment, yes … with prices starting at $244,340 for the Ecoscape model and $196,850 for the Classic. But for those looking to explore Australia's wildest corners in comfort with minimal need for caravan parks, it might just be the ultimate touring solution.
