Three Months, Two Dogs and a Whole Lot of Unplanned Detours
There was a moment, somewhere deep in the Daintree Rainforest, when I looked down at our two dogs calmly sitting on my lap as our boat quietly drifted along crocodile-filled waters. If someone had told me a few years ago that this would become one of my favourite travel memories, I would have laughed.
Yet there we were, surrounded by ancient rainforest, watching for crocodiles, with two very content four-legged travellers enjoying the ride just as much as we were.
That's the wonderful thing about life on the road. The memories you treasure are rarely the ones you planned.
Our latest adventure saw us spend three months travelling from Queensland's Sunshine Coast to Cooktown, hugging the coastline before making our way home through the breathtaking Atherton Tablelands. We visited and stayed at various locations including Rules Beach, Yeppoon, Airlie Beach, Conway, Cape Gloucester, Bowen, Townsville, Magnetic Island, Rollingstone, Cowley Beach, Mission Beach, Port Douglas, Cairns, the Daintree, Cooktown and Endeavour Falls.
Each stop offered something different, but it wasn't necessarily the places themselves that made the journey unforgettable. It was how each destination made us feel.

Atherton Tablelands: Queensland's Best-Kept Secret
One of our favourite discoveries was the Atherton Tablelands. The rolling green landscapes, welcoming country towns and slower pace of life captured our hearts almost immediately. It felt like Queensland's best-kept secret - a place where every scenic drive led to another hidden gem.
The Unexpected Finds: Cape Gloucester and DalSanto's Deli
Cape Gloucester was another standout. We spent a lazy afternoon enjoying lunch at Cape Gloucester Resort before sitting quietly on the beach overlooking Gloucester Island, soaking up one of those perfect North Queensland afternoons that you wish could last forever.
Then there are the unexpected finds that never appear on the cover of a travel brochure.
DalSanto's Continental Deli in Ayr became one of those little surprises that travellers love discovering and recommending to others. Sometimes it's the bakery, the butcher or the tiny café that ends up becoming the highlight of the day.
Travelling With Dogs: Our Daintree Crocodile Cruise
Travelling with our dogs adds another dimension to every trip. They aren't just passengers - they're part of the adventure. Finding dog-friendly experiences can sometimes be challenging, which made our Daintree crocodile cruise even more memorable. Safely harnessed and happily sitting with us throughout the cruise, they attracted plenty of smiles from fellow passengers and proved that dogs can make wonderful travelling companions.
Like every journey, not every destination was exactly what we'd imagined.

When Cooktown's Winds Sent Us to Endeavour Falls
Cooktown, despite its fascinating history, didn't quite win us over during this visit. Unfortunately, relentless winds made it difficult to enjoy caravan life the way we love it. For us, being able to sit outside under the awning with a cup of coffee while the dogs relax nearby is a huge part of the experience. When the weather keeps you indoors, the atmosphere changes completely.
Rather than push through, we changed our plans and moved to Endeavour Falls, just up the road. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. Sheltered by beautiful bushland, peaceful and incredibly picturesque, it reminded us of one of the greatest lessons we've learned through travelling Australia. Don't become too attached to your itinerary.
Before this trip, we'd booked much of our accommodation well in advance. While it felt organised at the time, we often found ourselves wishing we could stay longer in places we loved or leave sooner when conditions weren't ideal. Next time, we'll leave far more room for spontaneity. Of course, popular destinations like Bowen's Horseshoe Bay often require bookings many months ahead, especially during peak season when the grey nomads arrive. But wherever possible, we've learned to let the road guide us instead of the calendar.

What Life on the Road Teaches You
Living in a caravan also teaches you what really matters. Comfort quickly becomes more valuable than possessions. Investing in quality outdoor chairs means long afternoons watching the world go by become even more enjoyable. Upgrading to a Better Living mattress gave us better sleep and made every day feel easier. And packing less? That's perhaps the simplest lesson of all. You really don't need as much as you think. Most days you'll happily rotate the same comfortable clothes, enjoy simple meals and realise that experiences are worth far more than extra luggage.
Practicality matters too. Understanding your caravan's weights and loading heavy items over the axles and towards the tow ball gives peace of mind and makes travelling safer.
Yet when I think back on our journey, it's not the practical lessons that come flooding back first. It's the people. The woman in Forbes who noticed how cold we were one winter's day and insisted I share a mug of her homemade mulled wine. The neighbours in caravan parks who quickly became afternoon companions over drinks and nibbles. The conversations around campfires, the travel tips exchanged over morning coffee, and the stories generously shared by people who all seem connected by a common love of the open road. Those moments become the real souvenirs.
Once we've settled into a caravan park, we love exploring well beyond its boundaries. It's not unusual for us to spend the day driving an hour in any direction with the dogs, discovering tiny towns, finding local cafés and walking streets we might otherwise never have seen. We make a conscious effort to support local communities wherever we travel. Fresh fruit and vegetables come from roadside stalls or local growers, while my husband Rob inevitably finds the town's butcher before almost anything else. We also like visiting nearby caravan parks - not because we're moving, but because we're always adding possibilities to our ever-growing list for future adventures.
Thankfully, throughout thousands of kilometres, our caravan never missed a beat. A reliable van gives you the confidence to focus on what matters most - enjoying the journey rather than worrying about the next mechanical issue. As we headed home, one thought kept returning. The best memories weren't created by perfectly planned itineraries or famous tourist attractions. They came from unexpected detours, changing our plans, accepting invitations, discovering hidden places and taking the time to simply sit still and appreciate where we were. After all, the road has a wonderful way of rewarding those who are prepared to let it lead.
And sometimes, if you're very lucky, it might even lead you to a crocodile cruise with two very happy dogs sitting on your lap
