RV Spring Cleaning: 8 Jobs to Tackle Before Your Next Trip

The days are getting longer and the caravan in the driveway is looking very tempting. A little RV spring cleaning now means you'll be ready to roll the moment the weekend calls.

The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up and suddenly the caravan in the driveway is very tempting.

Spring is the perfect excuse to give your home on wheels a little love before your next round of road trips. After a winter of weekend escapes (or a few months parked up gathering dust, we don’t judge), a good clean can make your caravan feel fresh, organised and ready for adventure.

And no, we’re not suggesting you spend an entire weekend scrubbing with a toothbrush. A few strategic jobs can make a surprisingly big difference.

1. Empty absolutely everything out

Yes, everything. Pull out the chairs, hoses, power leads, levelling blocks, outdoor mats and all the mysterious bits and pieces that have migrated into your storage compartments.

It’s much easier to properly clean when you’re starting with an empty space - and you might discover you’ve somehow been travelling with four bottles of dishwashing liquid and a camp chair nobody has sat in since 2022.

Give cupboards and storage compartments a wipe, vacuum out the crumbs and dirt, then only put back what you actually use.

2. Give the RV exterior a proper wash

Your caravan cops plenty on the road: dust, mud, bugs, bird droppings, tree sap and whatever else Australia can throw at it.

Give the exterior a thorough wash using caravan-friendly cleaning products, paying attention to the roof, awning, windows, wheels and those easy-to-forget nooks around doors and hatches.

While you’re there, look for anything that seems loose, cracked or damaged. Spring cleaning can double as a handy mini-inspection.

3. Show the RV fridge some love

There are few things less appealing than opening the caravan fridge after a few months and being greeted by that smell.

Take everything out, remove the shelves and give the interior a good clean. Check expiry dates on sauces, condiments and other supplies you may have left behind.

If the fridge has been switched off while the caravan is stored, leaving the door slightly ajar can also help prevent mould and unpleasant smells.

4. Raid the pantry

That tin of baked beans may technically survive the apocalypse, but the half-open packet of crackers probably won't.

Go through your caravan pantry and check expiry dates, throw out stale or opened food and wipe down the shelves.

It’s also a good opportunity to rethink what you're carrying. If something has travelled thousands of kilometres around Australia without ever being eaten, maybe it doesn't need an invitation on the next trip.

5. Freshen up the bedding

Strip the bed and wash your sheets, pillowcases, blankets, mattress protectors and cushion covers where possible.

Give the mattress a vacuum and let plenty of fresh air through the caravan while you work.

If your caravan has been closed up over winter, open the windows, doors and roof vents for a while too. Nothing says spring quite like getting rid of that slightly stuffy "caravan has been parked for three months" aroma.

6. Declutter your RV cupboards

Caravans have an incredible ability to accumulate things. Three torches. Seven reusable shopping bags. Enough plastic cups to host a small wedding. A board game nobody likes.

Spring is your chance to be ruthless.

Go cupboard by cupboard and ask yourself whether you actually use each item. Getting rid of unnecessary gear doesn't just make the caravan easier to organise - it can also help reduce the amount of weight you're carting around.

7. Don't forget the outdoor gear and awning

Your spring clean shouldn't stop at the caravan door. Pull out your camping chairs, tables, barbecue, outdoor kitchen equipment, mats and other gear and give everything a clean.

Open your awning fully and check its condition too. If you've ever rolled it away slightly damp after a rainy camping trip, you'll know exactly why this job is worth doing.

8. Finish with a road-trip reset

Once everything is sparkling, take a few minutes to get the caravan ready for the season ahead.

Restock your everyday essentials, replace anything that's missing and make sure your frequently used gear is easy to reach.

It's also a good time to check practical items such as your first-aid kit, batteries, torches and emergency supplies, and make sure nothing needs replacing before you head away.

Then comes the best part: deciding where you're going next.

Let’s be honest: the real reward for spring cleaning your caravan isn't having perfectly organised cupboards, it's having a caravan that's packed, fresh and ready to roll the moment someone says, "How about we go away this weekend?"
