Are you rvSafe? Essential Tips for Safe RV Travel in Australia

Prepare for an unforgettable journey through the Australian Outback with tips on what to embrace and avoid for a safer, more enjoyable RV trip.

In response to the alarming statistic that two-thirds of road deaths in Australia occur on rural roads and that over 90% of camping trips are enjoyed in rural areas, we’ve been working with our partners on a new national RV road safety campaign called, ‘Are You RVSafe?’

The initiative seeks to address the gap in RV safety education and ensure that all Australians, regardless of their RV experience, are well-informed and prepared for safe travel.

As part of the initiative, we’ve been working on a TV and YouTube series. This series took two of Australia’s top RV driver trainers to challenge a caravanner (myself), 4WDer and motorhome driver, all with different levels of experience, to see if they’re fit for Australia’s open roads and Outback. On one of the episodes, you’ll even see myself face my worst fear, reversing a large caravan into a caravan site with a crowd of onlookers. Ugggh. How did I go? You’ll have to watch the final episode to see. But in the meantime, let’s talk about episode one and where you can catch the series.

Episode One: RV Safety Training Begins

In episode one, we meet the contestants and learn of their backgrounds and motivations behind learning how to be RVSafe. Myself personally? After an accident 10 years ago that involved a drunk driver crashing into our family home, I want to make sure that I’m being as safe as I can on the road so that we all get home safely at the end of our holiday.

Top RV Safety Tips from Our Experts

We talk about the biggest safety risks when RVing, and also learn how to use a UHF properly, including some great tips on being a bit more descriptive when communicating directions with others in a convoy. Finally, we all get to jump in the passenger seat of a truck and go for a little drive to experience, first-hand, just how much visibility a truck doesn’t have. After all, we are sharing the road with them.

Tune In: Catch the Are You rvSafe? Series

If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, make sure you tune into Channel 10 on Saturdays at 12.30pm to catch the last few episodes. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to go back and watch anything you missed on YouTube!
