RV Kimberley guide: Gibb River Road's best gorges, camping, and WA outback.
Sun-drenched days, dramatic landscapes, cascading waterfalls and refreshing swimming holes – the 660-kilometre Gibb River Road is always full of surprises even for regular visitors.
We've been visiting this part of the world for three decades, and this time our starting point is Broome, where the red dirt meets the enormous Indian Ocean's 10-plus-metre tides. It's a Kimberley town favourite for its laid-back atmosphere, stunning coastline, and the Staircase to the Moon phenomenon. But the pearling history, cosmopolitan cuisine, and beach sunsets are also our calling card. From Broome, it's a little more than 200 kilometres to the western end of the Gibb River Road – affectionately dubbed 'the Gibb'.
Western Kimberley RV Travel Wonders
There's excitement as we turn onto the Gibb, following this bitumen section for 100 kilometres before taking the Windjana Gorge/Tunnel Creek turnoff. As long-term fans of these natural wonders in the Napier Range, we travel along the dusty dirt road and base ourselves at Bandilngan (Windjana Gorge) National Park for a few nights. Our camp is spacious and adjacent to park amenities, and it's a treat camping alongside a mountain escarpment which was once an ancient coral reef. As Windjana Gorge is also home to one of the largest concentrations of freshwater crocodiles in the Kimberley, we always look forward to visiting… as it's the perfect destination to see them sunning themselves on the sand in their natural habitat.
