Australia's Off-Road Hidden Gems

These aren't your pull-in, plug-in and pour-a-wine kind of destinations. Australia's off-road hidden gems skip the sealed roads and busy caravan parks altogether, trading them for waterfalls, salt lakes and red dirt you'll be talking about for years. If your van's up for a bit of dust and a mild disregard for comfort, here's where to point it.

These aren’t your “pull in, plug in, and pour a wine” kind of destinations.

They’re the kind you talk about for years after. They skip the sealed roads, busy caravan parks and keep driving until the map starts looking a little… questionable.

If you’ve got an off-road van and a mild disregard for comfort, these are the places that make every rattling cupboard and dusty kilometre completely worth it.

The Gibb River Road, WA

The Spot: 660km of raw Kimberley wilderness. Think waterfalls tucked behind rocky gorges, swimming holes that feel like secrets, and red dirt that gets everywhere. Bell Gorge and Emma Gorge are the kind of places you never forget.

Caravan Need: Corrugations that’ll test your soul. You’ll want a serious off-road hybrid van that won’t shake itself apart halfway through.

Lake Gairdner, SA

The Spot: A blindingly white salt lake that looks like another planet. No crowds, no noise - just an endless horizon and the kind of silence that makes you stop talking mid-sentence.

Caravan Need: Sturdy gear for the final push. Gravel, sand and isolation mean this is not the place for anything fragile.

François Peron National Park, WA

The Spot: Red sand dunes crashing into an electric-blue ocean. Camp right near the water, watch the sun melt into the sea, and try to comprehend how this place is even real.

Caravan Need: Deep sand driving skills and a van that can handle it. If it’s not built tough, it’s not making it in.

Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles), WA

The Spot: Giant striped domes that look like someone went wild with a paintbrush. It’s weird, it’s iconic and it feels like stepping onto another planet.

Caravan Need: The access road is a bone-rattling obstacle course. High clearance and solid suspension aren’t optional, they’re survival.

Cape York – Old Telegraph Track, QLD

The Spot: As far north as you can go without leaving the country. River crossings, lush bush camps and tracks that look like they were designed to scare you.

Caravan Need: This is hardcore territory. You’ll need a high-clearance off-road camper and the confidence to back it up.
