Relax in Artesian Waters

The Great Artesian Basin is one of the largest artesian freshwater basins in the world.

Bubbling away far below the surface of Narrabri Shire lies the Great Artesian Basin. Ancient in its creation, the Great Artesian Basin is one of the largest artesian freshwater basins in the world. Covering an area of over 1.7 million square kilometres, the basin lies underneath approximately one-fifth of the Australian continent, extending from Cape York to Dubbo. Artesian water is underground water confined and pressurised within a porous and permeable geological formation and here in the north-west the waters are generally 38 degrees - great to soak away those aches and pains and rejuvenate your body!

Kamilaroi Aboriginal people used the natural springs from the Great Artesian Basin as a source of water in times of drought and European settlers realised the potential of accessing flowing waters when bores were drilled into the basin near Bourke in 1878. The ensuing reliable water supply paved the way for developing rural communities, a valuable stock industry and enhancing the prosperity of agricultural production within the rich black soils of the Narrabri Shire.

You will find seven distinctive and unique Hot Artesian Spa facilities amidst the tranquil settings of north-west New South Wales. The closest to Narrabri is the Pilliga Artesian Bore Baths. Constructed in 1902 as a permanent town water supply after severe drought, the Pilliga Artesian Bore Baths has become a popular recreational spot for swimming. In 1980 Tamworth Pool Contractors installed the present pool. Since then ongoing improvements have been made including a roof covering the pool area. In late 2011 Narrabri Shire Council completed further upgrades including new toilet and BBQ facilities, improved  access into the pool and an expansion of the camping pad.

Immerse yourself in the flowing, hot, mineral-rich Artesian water and seek the many reputed advantages of the waters. The therapeutic value of this mineral rich water has long been recognised by locals and visitors who make regular pilgrimage to soak away their aches and pains. A roof covers the pool area and it has lighting for night time bathing and steps for easy access.

The Pilliga Bore is the ideal facility to enjoy in your motorhome as it is a designated primitive campground. This means campervans and motorhomes are welcome to stay for free, though facilities are very basic and no powered sites are provided. The Pilliga Bore Baths are located just 96 kilometres from Narrabri and 55 kilometres from Wee Waa on the fully sealed Pilliga Road.
