Its Appalachian Mountains are iconic. Its country music lyrics are melodic. It’s where lovers meet, greet and eat. But unknown to many, Virginia is also a destination that offers wellness while highway-hopping in the USA. Touring Virginia’s country roads, I discover a hidden health and wellbeing scene – on a grand scale.
Ancient Springs in Warm Springs, Virginia
In the Allegheny Highlands, a tiny undulating town’s immaculately painted weatherboard houses pop up from their picture-book setting. It’s where time seems to tick to a yesteryear beat. Just off US Route 220, appropriately named ‘Warm Springs’ in Virginia’s Bath County is endowed with healing, mineral-rich waters. Its geothermal offerings are believed to have been discovered by the Native American stewards of the land.
On approach, I think I spot two randomly placed yurts. Upon closer inspection, the timber-panelled constructions are anything but – as they steam from the oculus of their domed rafters.
