A road trip that proves Tasmania punches well above its weight.
After an overnight crossing from Geelong, we arrive in Devonport – famed for its coastal setting and as the landing point for the Spirit of Tasmania ferry.
No matter how many times I cross Bass Strait I still get the buzz – like I’ve washed ashore (miraculously, with our caravan in tow) at the edge of a faraway land. The water seems bluer, the mountains sharper, the air that little bit crisper. I also pause to remember the deep and enduring connection the Palawa people continue to have with lutruwita/Tasmania.
Any time is a good time to visit; but in 2026, with the late-year launch of two new purpose-built vessels, Spirit of Tasmania IV and V, there’s a raft of fresh experiences rolling out across the state.
