The briny smell of kelp rides on the breeze. Salt-tough scrub clings to dunes, and clouds move steadily forward as though in a race to reach land. Waves crash onto the empty beach and cliffs loom in the distance. Walking the short trail of wooden planks to Middle Bay, it’s easy to imagine I’m alone on Bruny Island/Lunawanna.
I arrived after collecting Valerie the Van in Hobart. A Toyota Hiace workhorse, Valerie will be my companion on one of Australia’s most southerly islands. I’m eager to explore during the shoulder season after experiencing summer’s tourist tide.
