While it may be our nation’s capital, Canberra is all too often overlooked by road trippers with their eyes on other prizes. Sure, politicians may be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about the ACT, but Canberra has a whole lot more going for it than just polly spotting. From top museums and galleries to one of Australia’s youngest and most innovative wine scenes, here are some of the best things to see and do in our capital.

Lake Life

“Wonder to yourselves what London would be like without the Thames or what Paris would be like without the Seine.” It may have been brand new when then prime minister Sir Robert Menzies spoke these words at Lake Burley Griffin’s inauguration in 1964, but oh how right he was. The heart of Canberra, the lake is where you can walk or cycle the five-kilometre ‘bridge to bridge’ trail tracing the shoreline; have breakfast, lunch and dinner with a view; or head out onto the water in a variety of ways.

Go kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or enjoy a floating picnic on an electric GoBoat or Love Boat. Alternatively, get your hot and cold therapy on in a floating wood-fired sauna before taking a very refreshing dip in the lake.
