Celebrating 40 Years of CMCA

From humble beginnings forged in the back of a VW kombi at Tweed Heads, to an RV community spanning more than 60,000 members Australia-wide, this is the cmca origin story.

Uncover the origin story of Australia's largest RV club.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

It all started with a weekend in a rented motorhome. When Don and Erica Whitworth (N001) wanted to go travelling with their children, Don hired a motorhome to try it out for a weekend. “We thought, gee, this is all right,” Erica laughs. “So, then we bought a Sopru conversion VW Kombi. The two eldest slept up top, the youngest slept in a bolted bunk that went over the steering wheel and the front seat, while Don and I slept downstairs.”

After later taking the kids on motorhome holidays in the UK and America, including a trip from Toronto to San Francisco, Don and Erica returned to Australia with an even greater love for seeing the world from the road.

“Then, as the kids said, ‘dad needed a project’,” Erica recalls. “He'd been looking at various motorhome clubs in England, the US and New Zealand, and modelled ours on that. And away we went.”
