With plenty of space to throw the golf clubs, fishing rods, electric barbeque and an esky, you’ll be more than ready to pack up shop and hit the open road. Grab your suitcase, sun hat and your favourite book, because this list of our favourite Aussie beach spots is going to kick your inner wanderer into driving gear.
Four Mile Beach Port Douglas, QLD
Port Douglas is the gateway to the World Heritage wonders of Tropical North Queensland – it’s a short drive into the heart of the Wet Tropics rainforest at Daintree and Cape Tribulation.
Getting to Port Douglas from Cairns is an hour’s drive along one of Australia’s most scenic coastal roads with the rainforest on one side and the Great Barrier Reef on the other. Be sure to stop by Four Mile beach – one of the most famous northern beaches.
Cable Beach, WA
Broome, Western Australia is home to some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes and Cable Beach is no exception. Set on 22 kilometres of the most lusciously soft sand, this beach offers camel rides at sunset - an experience like no other. Whether you’re game to give it a go, or would rather watch from a distance, these camel trails make Cable Beach one of the most exotic summer destinations on our list. Plus the driving routes make the journey the biggest delight.
Wineglass Bay, TAS
True to Tasmania’s rugged scenery, the white sands of Wineglass Bay are surrounded by rocky cliffs. Nestled behind Freycinet National Park, you’ll never be short of things to do. If you can pull yourself away from the blue water, mountain biking, fishing and rock climbing are popular activities. We recommend a guided walking tour to reveal stunning aerial views of the entire bay.
East Woody Beach, NT
Usually when you think of Northern Territory you think deserts not beaches, but this state is home to some of the most unique coastlines in the country. Not far from Darwin, East Woody Beach is a gem not to be missed. The team at KEA highly recommends experiencing the dreamtime with Indigenous elders on their interpretive trail walks. This experience is true to Northern Territory and true to Australia’s Aboriginal heritage.
Hyams Beach, NSW
A village of less than 300 people, Hyams Bay is one of New South Wales’ few secluded seaside towns. With gentle warm waters, the beach is great for the kids and there is an abundance of wildlife that love to hang about! This bay is home to 206 species of birds, 27 species of mammals, 15 of amphibians, 23 reptiles and 180 different breeds of fish!
Bells Beach, VIC
Our guide would not be complete without sharing one of Australia’s first class surf beaches. Located along the Great Ocean Road, Bells Beach is the ultimate surfer hot spot, owning some of the best swell in the country. If you’re not a surfer, give it a go with some beginner classes – we guarantee there’s no feeling like it!

- Eat fish and chips on the beach;
- Drink apple ciders at sunset;
- Sleep under the stars; and
- Never leave home without your favourite summer read.
