Spotlight On Bundaberg

Bundaberg is famous for its rum, but its turtles, ginger beer and sugarcane fields are just as iconic. With the National Rally in town this month, here's why it's worth extending your stay.

Turtles, Rum and the Reef, All in One Sugar Town

Bundaberg is famous for its rum. But beyond the yellow-labelled bottle with the polar bear, its turtles, ginger beer and sugarcane fields are equally iconic. And this month Bundy adds another feather to its cap, hosting the National Rally of the largest RV club in Australia. If you're lingering in Bundaberg, this sugar town at the gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef has much to see and do. Visit Lady Musgrave Island, watch turtles nesting, enjoy a ginger beer tasting, learn from traditional custodians, and view colourful corals without getting your feet wet. You'd best extend your stay.

Turtle Time

The National Rally is a few weeks too early for the world-famous turtle nesting season at nearby Mon Repos, but that's just an excuse to linger longer. The beach here is home to the largest sea turtle rookery on eastern mainland Australia. From November, hundreds of endangered loggerhead turtles begin lumbering ashore to lay their eggs in the protected dunes. Then from January to March, the turtle hatching begins as thousands of teeny tiny hatchlings make a starlit break from their nests for the ocean. At the Mon Repos Turtle Centre you can join a ranger-guided tour on the beach to witness either of these enchanting spectacles.

Sip Happy

All roads lead to Bundaberg Rum, and it wouldn't be a true Bundy break if you didn't visit the distillery. Wander the museum and join a guided tour to learn about the genesis of Bundy's famous golden liquor, established in 1888. Hear how the region's rich volcanic soils produce the prized sugarcane that makes the molasses which is fermented, distilled and matured for two years to produce Bundy's award-winning rum.

Don't drink? Swing past the Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Barrel for a sample of the town's other iconic beverage, ginger beer. Enjoy a tasting (there are up to 15 flavours), see how the softies are brewed, print a personalised photo label and take home a six pack of your favourite flavours.

Heritage Stroll

Burn off all that sugar on a stroll through central Bundaberg's heritage streets. Pick up a map from the visitor information centre and enjoy a self-guided walk past buildings dating back to the nineteenth century. See the former Customs House in Barolin Street, mosey past the 1890s Bundaberg Post Office, and pause outside the old Queensland National Bank building, built in 1887. Take a rest on the shaded lawns at Buss Park before wandering down to Town Wharves on the Burnett River, once the bustling heart of this agricultural port town.

For a history lesson that predates colonial settlement by tens of thousands of years, join a cultural experience with Taribelang Bunda Cultural Tours. Your hosts will share their stories, artefacts and traditional bush tucker skills, as well as their work to protect Milbi, the freshwater turtle and sacred totem animal. See more at the Bundaberg Region tourism site.

Island Hop

Bundaberg is a springboard to Lady Musgrave Island, your gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Board a luxury catamaran that will whisk you out to a lagoon pontoon where 1,200 hectares of navigable reef await. Snorkel or dive over coral gardens, keeping eyes peeled for turtles, manta rays, reef sharks and maybe even a humpback whale (July to October). Dry off on a guided walk across the island, a small coral cay home to carnivorous Pisonia trees and flocks of white-capped noddy terns.

Coral Curiosities

To view thousands of colourful corals without getting your feet wet (or nose burnt), visit Monsoon Aquatics. The indoor coral farm is a nursery for 70,000 corals and 200 marine species. Join a behind-the-scenes tour and view the corals glow like hyper-colour neon discs under UV lights. See how the corals are fed and propagated and learn about the farm's important role in supporting reef conservation through research and supplying cultivated corals for commercial markets.

Berry Delightful

What's better than freshly picked strawberries on a hot Queensland day? Freshly scooped ice-cream made from 100 per cent pure fruit. Welcome to Tinaberries, a Bundy farm turned accidental agritourism business that transforms surplus berries and fruit waste into icy-cold treats. Pick up a punnet of strawberries from the shed shop in winter, and in September and October you can even pick your own. Year-round the farm serves strawberry, passionfruit and mango ice-creams enjoyed beneath the silky oak trees. Indulge in the aptly named Whole Shebang, a sundae with layers of ice-cream, freshly plucked strawberries and lashings of melted chocolate.

Eat

Grunske's by the River is a seafood market, takeaway outlet and restaurant all rolled into one on the Burnett River. Pick up a seafood platter to take back to your RV, get a serve of fish and chips to go, or book a table on the terrace overlooking the water. You can even park your caravan or large motorhome on site.

For brunch in a whimsical setting, try the Windmill Cafe at Bargara. This award-winning cafe sits beneath a replica Dutch windmill and puts on a delicious spread of brekky faves, including a corn fritter stack, acai bowl and breakfast burrito. There's even pup-approved gelato for your four-legged friend.

Stay

If you're here during turtle season, a stay at Turtle Sands Resort is a must. Reopened under the NRMA banner in 2024, this beachfront park is walking distance to the Mon Repos Turtle Centre. With this great location comes great responsibility, and all guests must sign a Turtle Protection Promise on arrival, committing to stay off the beach at night, keep noise and lights low and flatten any turtle-obstructing sandcastles at the day's end. The park is nestled between the beach and a nature reserve and scores big points for sustainability. Think solar power, recycled plastic pavers, native plantings and a ‘dark park’ ethos to minimise turtle-disorienting light at night. The park has 46 villas and 69 caravan and camping sites (the premium ones are on the beachfront), as well as a huge pool in the shape of, you guessed it, a turtle. Other facilities include a dump point, barbecues, camp kitchen, e-bike hire and kiosk.
