From cosy alpine villages to scenic off-mountain campgrounds, discover how to enjoy a memorable snow holiday with your caravan without taking it onto the slopes.
Our ears pop as the car snakes up the mountain, a scattering of white sprinkles turning to pebbles, then boulders, then a carpet straight out of Narnia. “Look kids, see the snow!” Mouths are agape in the back seat. Eyes wide. Minds blown. And we haven’t even set foot on the white stuff.
I’d always put a snowcation in the too hard basket. Too expensive, too far, too cold. And we can’t take our caravan. Or can we? Yes, as it turns out, we can. But banish the thought of parking up on a snowdrift at the base of the ski runs and hotfooting it across the powder to the lifts. Taking a van ‘to the snow’ requires a different mindset and a little more effort.
We’re parking the caravan off-mountain and driving to the slopes. It’s a compromise that saves a bundle in accommodation and eating out – plus we get to enjoy the campfire feels back at the caravan park.
